Women’s Museum, Dubai
It is an adventure trying to find this museum, not because it is difficult, but because it is located in the heart of the Gold Souq neighbourhood in Deira. The well-considered and modern displays highlight the many important and diverse contributions made by Emirati women to the country that we know now.
A real diversity of women are profiled, ranging from the powerful to the everyday. Sheikha Salama bint Butti, the mother of the inaugural UAE President Sheikh Zayed is profiled, and easily explains why today she is still celebrated as the “Mother of the Nation”. The visitor also learns of all those marvellous women who were the first – doctors, educators, businesswomen and leaders – reaching heights, and taking their sisters up with them. Many women and their families have shared their stories, which are richly illustrated with objects and photographs. The displays also provide a very valuable introduction to Gulf women’s cultural heritage, interpreted in a way that is particularly engaging and informative for international visitors.
Of course, you will find the Women’s Museum in Bait al Banat (The Girls’ House).
