Museum Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech
Not surprisingly, this Museum is a gesamtkunstwerk, an all-embracing or total art form. It is after all a museum honouring the life and work of a man who valued the detail. There are 4 exhibition galleries, an auditorium, shop, indoor garden and a terraced café, all of which share a consistent attitude and inspiration. The spaces are beautiful, the geometry is considered, and the materials luxurious without being garish. It is a perfect capsule in which the couture, photographs, jewellery, drawings, performances, displays and food are all allowed to take centre stage.
The building, designed by Studio KO, is solid, strong, geometric, and secretive. It is an ideal package for the important objects to be found inside; it protects, contains and sets the stage. Unlike many of today’s new mega-museums, this building is compact and welcoming, and on a lovely human scale that makes a visitor feel welcome, even in the company of such a giant of a designer.
